Yamuna yatra - यमुना का सफर यमनोत्री से दिल्ली तक

Looking at black drain like Yamuna, it never occured to us that we will ever take a dip in it!To our surprise, we never thought of the river beyond Delhi, Agra where the water has become so toxic!
The credit goes to Mr Vimlendu, founder of Swechha who not only made us think, but also took us on the journey of Yamuna from Yamunotri to the plains!
Since it was monsoon the river was gushing with water from - the seasonal streams, waterfalls, all over the mountains and thus we experienced the river in full bliss when the nature was blooming with greens and water bodies all across. But we were told that it is not the same in winters and summers when there is enough water to meet everyone's need but not everyone's greed. The river almost dies as it enters the plains where all its water is harnessed through multiple giant barrages (add name kd dams ) and canals and there is often an inter state tussle which happens as to what part of Yamuna belongs to whom!
Isn't it strange that such a great water body is too is not suffice for us to feed ourselves!
It was so inhuman to see Yamuna dying at hathganj (check ) barrage where 452 cubic metres of water is released for Delhi just to keep the river alive!
This calls for everyone to pay attention to their water harnessing ways and it demands for a shift to water harvesting, water conserving ways before the river kneels down infront of the never ending demands of us humans!

It was so painful to see the innocent yatris ranging from a small 10 year old kid to 82 years old trying their level best to trek all their way up the steep slopes of Yamunotri just to pay their tribute to Yamuna goddess! Yes, the river! They don't realise that in their journey to reach their supreme power, they are actually generating more waste and making the river cry, rather than making it happy! The place must have got its religious significance as the token of gratitude by the previous people, who would worship the river goddess and express their immense gratitude towards it to fulfill all their needs! But, today, we have lost the real essence of worshipping, and everyone is just busy pouring chunris, flowers and what not in the name of their bhakti, without considering where will it all end up and where will the river goddess store all its bhakts offerings ?

When we talked to the local people around during our community interaction, we were taken back by the subtlety of their answer to the above question, they said, Maa Yamuna takes care of all our needs and us, we throw everything down into the river, and river cleans it up all, we never fall sick and if we do, yamuna water and the aushdhees ( natural herbs) are enough to cure us all!

This also explains why the toxic levels of yamuna water are highest in Agra. It's because the amount of waste garbage dumped by the people in upstream, becomes the consumable water for the people in downstream and hence the water becomes completely black down in Agra,Mathura, Vrindavan, which is also known as PlayStation of Krishna!.

Isn't it ironical that how much we care for our temple at home, not taking in shoes, not touching things without taking a shower, lot of puja and everything, and on the same hand, it don't even occur to us that worship in our home temple is actually polluting the God's residence and it's getting difficulties for the superpower to breathe in their holy premises!

The yatra opened up so many doors for us to ponder and take the needed actions!
The sessions imparted some real life values which alongside awakening the need to preserve nature in all its forms, before its fury transforms all the states into uttarakhamd's kedar nath and creates havoc!

Immense gratitude to nature and all the nature bearers for this heart warming and eye opening exercise which enabled lot many learnings and a bunch of once in a lifetime kind of experiences!!

Special thanks to Swechha and Vasant Valley School for taking such amazing initiatives. More and more people need to experience the rewilding and grounded experiences like this to establish a better connect with nature and oneself.
